Personal Data Cache manages file storage on client machines in adistributed environment. Personal Data Cache creates a local data cacheon the client machine's local disk storage (client cache) andautomatically moves files between the client cache and a standard NFSserver's storage (server store). Files are transparently copied to theclient (cached) as they are needed and periodically synchronized withthe server when they are modified. When the usage of the client storeexceeds a configurable limit, file space on the client is releasedaccording to a configurable policy. This results in the followingbenefits:- File access is faster because file operations occur on local disks
rather than over the network- Network traffic and server load are reduced, thereby increasing their
scalability- Users on client workstations can continue to work when there are
server or network failures, thus, Personal Data Cache increases the dataavailability and fault tolerance- Personal Data Cache protects against data loss by periodically
synchronizing modified files with the server- Transparent file caching and file synchronization and their loose-
coupling to user applications makes Personal Data Cache an excellent filemanagement product for mobile computing environments- Clients with limited local storage can take advantage of network
storage rather than incur the expense of additional local storagePersonal Data Cache does not require any special network configuration orserver software; it operates with any standard NFS server.
